25 April this year marked the 60th anniversary of scientists discovering the double helix, otherwise known as deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. Although DNA research has been taking place since late in the 1860’s, it wasn’t until 1953 that biologist James Watson and physicist Francis Crick discovered that DNA molecules actually formed a three-dimensional double helix. So since this important discovery, what have we been using DNA testing for? Well, apart from the obvious DNA paternity testing, a simple DNA test could mean that you would have the knowledge required to compile your family tree.
DNA Paternity Test Uses
More than 50% of babies born to women aged below 30 are now born out of wedlock. Understandably, this is not a comfortable topic to discuss for some people, but there is a real need for a putative father to discover whether he is actually a true biological parent and one way of finding out is to take a paternity test in Birmingham. If the mother disagrees, it is possible to have a court-ordered paternity test.
Various conditions are genetic or inherited, and unfortunately there is not a huge amount we can do about these, but with new advents in DNA paternity testing in Birmingham, Al. it is possible to discover if we have an increased propensity toward a condition. There are common genetic variants which would indicate a higher risk of contracting a particular condition, including several of the cancers. By being tested at a DNA test center, you can find out if you have an increased chance of developing a disease before it actually happens. In this way, Birmingham DNA testing may be used as a preventative measure.
Despite an increase in general knowledge, there are still many myths circulating regarding the use of DNA paternity testing. Some of the more common ones are:
- You need to wait until the baby is born. This is not true; it is possible to have a non-invasive paternity test in Birmingham, while the baby is ‘in utero.’
- You have to have a needle. False: our paternity test center in Birmingham uses a simple swab taken from the inside of the mouth. No need to be scared of needles anymore.
- I don’t need to go to a clinic; I can buy a test off the internet. True: you don’t need to visit a Birmingham paternity test center, but be aware that cheap ‘DIY’ test kits off the internet might well not hold up in a court of law.
There are different types of drug tests available, including the analysis of blood, urine, hair, sweat and saliva. One of the most common kinds of drug tests used in Birmingham is that of urine analysis as it is relatively easy and simple to collect the required specimen. Many employers view the cost of drug testing their employees to be money well spent as it is a cost-effective way of getting rid of possibly disruptive people from the workplace.
